If you’re bottle feeding your baby, then you’ll need to sterilize! Sterilization cleans up all the gunk in the hard-to-reach parts of milk bottles, protecting your baby’s developing immune system from overly harmful micro-organisms.

On average, young babies will chow through six bottles of milk every day. In fact, electric sterilizers are just one of the ways to sterilize your baby’s bottles, but since it’s the most popular, we’ve decided to focus on it. These cleaning powerhouses can accommodate not just milk bottles, but also breast pump parts, feeding utensils, and dinnerware.

Here’s our scoop on the top 5 electric sterilizers, evaluated for ease of operation, versatility, and of course, dismantling and cleaning.

1. Phillip Avent 3-in-1 Electric Steam Sterilizer

Imagine a sterilizer that can adjust to fit the different sizes of baby accessories that you have. The Philips Avent 3-in-1 Electric Steam Sterilizer does just that! It can be dismantled and formed back into three different sterilizer sizes, and can hold up to 6 bottles at one go.

This machine is as versatile as acting maestro Anthony Hopkins, being able to fit both narrow and wide-necked bottles from other brands. Simply pour water into the sterilizer, and in 6 minutes your baby accessories will be clean, after which the sterilizer switches off to conserve your electricity bill. The sterilizer uses BPA-free material in its construction, and dismantling and cleaning is simple and straightforward.

2. Dr Brown’s Electric Natural Flow Deluxe Sterilizer

Deluxe Electric Bottle Sterilizer

Another strong contender, Dr Brown’s Electric Natural Flow Deluxe Sterilizer safely sterilizes up to 6 bottles in 12 minutes. The detachable basket holds all the bottles in an ideal position for hot steam to sanitize each bottle’s interior, and the accessory tray at the collar holds the itsy-bitsy stuff like teats, pacifiers, and breast pump parts. Cleaning everything at one go sure has its benefits!

Although 12 minutes isn’t exactly gold timing when it comes to electric sterilizers, this sterilizer accomplishes its job very thoroughly, and the one-button operation makes it hassle-free to operate. Likewise, it’s free of BPA, with an automatic shut-off feature. Dr Brown’s products will fit in comfortably into this hothouse, but other brands may be a tight squeeze.

3. Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Electric Sterilizer

If speed is what you’re looking for, Tommee Tippee’s Closer to Nature Electric Sterilizer will seal the deal. With a sleek, elliptical design, this sterilizer boast a time of 5 minutes. The contents of the sterilizer will remain sterile for up to 24 hours if the lid remains unopened, and can fit up to 6 milk bottles at full capacity.

The best thing is, this sterilizer has less than five parts, which makes dismantling and cleaning a cinch. The material used is BPA-free too, so your baby will be safe from any harmful chemicals. This sterilizer can manage bottles from other brands as well, making it both versatile, budget friendly, and one of our favourite picks!

 4. BEABA 2-in-1 Electric Sterilizer

This sterilizer is the “new kid on the block”, having been introduced rather recently. Still, it packs a punch, with its cylindrical space-saving design, and a reported 6 minute sterilization timing to kill 99.99% of micro-organisms. The sterilizer can alternate between the compact and large configurations, being able to store 6 and 9 bottles respectively. The heat sensitive safety handle changes colour when the lid is hot, so it scores bonus points on safety!

5. Munchkin Steam Guard Electric Sterilizer

Munchkin Steam Guard Electric Sterilizer

Last but not least – the Munchkin Steam Guard Electric Sterilizer is one of the more popular designs in the market. Flexible enough to fit bottles from most bottle brands, this spacious sterilizer can manage bottle accessories and feeding utensils as well. The multi-level rack secures bottles of different sizes well enough, and the side closures eliminate accidental spills.

With a large capacity to manage 9 bottles at one go, and a sterilization time of 6 minutes, this sterilizer is fast, inexpensive, and gets the job done. However, we noticed that the body of the sterilizer lacks a cool-to-touch feature, so take note of this when operating the device.

No matter how good your sterilizer is, periodic maintenance is necessary to ensure its long life. Empty and dry your sterilizer after each session, as water accumulated at the bottom of the sterilizer contains dead organic material, and may pose a health hazard. Most manufacturers recommend that the sterilizer be cleaned every few cycles to remove any bad stuff that accumulates. A simple cleaning solution will be to use fresh water, or mixed with a little vinegar, to sanitize your sterilizer.
