A baby is a never-ending bundle of surprises, especially when it comes to answering the call of nature. And you’ll have to quickly buzz off to grab those baby wipes that always seem to finish too fast.

Baby wipes are ideal when nappy rash is an issue: painful, red bumps that are really uncomfortable for your baby, and could send them to a state of non-stop crying and wailing. Most wipes are alcohol free, and come in un-scented and lightly scented versions. With water as the primary ingredient, these wipes also contain synthetic cleaners, synthetic preservatives, enhancers (to adjust PH, promote smooth application, and for fast absorbency) and skin conditioners. There are a generous range of baby wipes brands out there; which ones are both effective and safe for your baby? The Toddle Team does some digging to find out!

Ingredients

Water, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Benzoate, Glycerin, Carbomer, Coco-Glucoside, Glyceryl Oleate, Lauryl Glucoside, Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate, p-Anisic Acid, Citric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Glyceryl Polyacrylate, Parfum

ANSM, the French National Agency for medicines and health products safety, recommended to the EU commission that the levels of Phenoxyethanol should be reduced to 0.4% in products for children under three, and more “intimate” products for babies, such as nappy balms and baby wipes, should be free from this chemical entirely. You can read the article here.

Sodium Benzoate is a widely used preservative.  It is safe at lower concentrations. However, when combined with Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), benzene, a known carcinogen, will be formed. Parfum and Phthlates should be avoided if possible, as they are endocrine disruptors that could cause adverse effects on the neurological, reproductive and immune system.
